Degas Copy

Edgar Degas "The Dance Lesson" 1879 Oil on Canvas, in the collection at the National Gallery of Art in DC.
Doing a copy makes you realize the precision that goes into a piece. Degas really was brillant and his sense of ease is impressive.

Lauren P. (detail)
This was a really quick painting that I believe was kicked out in about 30 minutes. Although I had many, many starts that failed and got wiped out.

Self Portrait - long night
This is pretty old and done in the early hours in the morning after a long night in the studio. It was the last of about 12 portraits I had done through the course of the night. I think it shows.

Teacup with Lightbulb
This painting was done very quickly and I left most of the surface unfinished. I thought that it really showed how objects emerge from absence to presence. The Pellegrino bottle is captured mid-birth while the teacup and lightbulb are pretty well realized.

Teacup Still Life

If one looks at my still lifes there are a lot of objects that I am always interesting in painting. Most of the work is very small. I think this one is 4.5x5.5 inches or so.

Still Life lamp and bottle

This still life has a couple of older paintings in the background that were a pleasure to paint twice.

Hilden and Faygo with Juice Glass
I made this one a couple of years ago for someone and never gave it to them because after I painted it I learned that they didn't like Faygo. Oh well.
